When I found out I was having a little boy, one of my first thoughts was how excited I was to take him hiking and camping in the beautiful Colorado mountains. Living here has always made me feel connected to nature, so it only felt right to bring a piece of that love for the outdoors into his nursery.

Colorado’s stunning landscapes inspired every detail of my son’s mountain-themed nursery. I wanted his room to feel peaceful yet full of adventure—a cozy little space where he could dream about the trails we’ll one day explore together.

Bringing the Mountains Indoors

My husband and I decided early on that we wanted the focal point of the room to be a mountain mural. We spent a weekend sketching out overlapping blue and green mountain ranges across the main wall. Once we were happy with the design, we added wooden inlays along some of the peaks for texture and depth. The natural wood added warmth and tied in beautifully with the rest of the room’s furniture.

To give the mural a magical touch, we incorporated subtle LED lights along the horizon line. At night, they cast a soft, dreamy glow—almost like a sunset fading behind the mountains.

One of my favorite finishing touches is the wall-mounted cloud lamps. Each one has a pull string that feels playful and whimsical, and when lit, they add the perfect “sky” element above the mountain range.

Designing with Natural Elements

The furniture in the room follows the same natural theme. The crib and dresser have light wood accents that complement the wooden mountain inlays perfectly. I kept the main color palette neutral with shades of white and grey so the space feels calm and airy. Pops of color come through in the toys, books, and bedding—small, cheerful accents that can easily change as he grows.

How to Plan and Design a Nursery

Designing a nursery can feel overwhelming, but it’s also one of the most rewarding projects you’ll ever take on. Here are a few tips I learned along the way:

  1. Start with a theme or feeling. Whether it’s “mountain adventure,” “woodland animals,” or simply “calm and cozy,” having a central idea will guide your color palette and décor choices.

  2. Choose your focal point. In our case, the mountain mural was the centerpiece. For others, it might be a statement crib, wallpaper, or a gallery wall. Build the rest of your design around that feature.

  3. Mix practicality with personality. It’s easy to get swept up in design ideas, but remember: nurseries should also function smoothly. Make sure essentials—like the changing station, storage, and lighting—fit your daily routine.

  4. Incorporate texture and layers. Wood, woven baskets, plush rugs, and soft lighting add depth and comfort. It’s these little details that make the room feel lived in and loved.

  5. Leave room to grow. Babies grow fast! Choose furniture and décor that can transition as your child gets older. For example, a neutral wall color or adaptable storage will save you from redesigning too soon.

A Space for Adventure and Rest

Every time I walk into my son’s room, I feel a sense of calm mixed with excitement for all the adventures to come. The mountains on his wall remind me of the trails we’ll hike together, the stars we’ll camp under, and the love for nature we’ll share as he grows.

Creating this mountain-themed nursery was more than a design project—it was the first chapter in the story of our family’s adventures.
